Nassir’s White Coat by Artigua Kilpatrick, Illustrated by Rebecca Fischer, is a wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated book with a powerfully potent and impacting message in this era, especially. A book of 42 pages, it is published by BHC Press and available for purchase at the following links, in hardcover and e-book:

It will teach your child about self-awareness and how to deal with differences. And I loved how it hinged on the fact that the children were blind and unaffected by Nassir’s white coat, and that it was the elder’s who made a big fuss. Children are resilient and free of the societal norms the powers that be prescribe, to create division and chaos, and perhaps that is why as the old adage goes, “A child shall lead them.”

It’s a perfect story for our times of civil unrest and racial tension. Vocabulary enhancing words include: lowland, patiently, unexpected, albino, outsider, unbearable, piggyback, experiences, struggles, grunting, panting, infant, suit, skilled, disapproving, murmurs, disbelief, managed, trembled, scattered, adventure, plucked, plopped, drifted and fascinated. This book is a great read for 4 to 8 years old’s.

Artigua Kilpatrick is a young African-American woman, and the author of 3 other children’s books: The Lonely Warthog, Tony’s Bad Dream and Tony’s Treasure Hunt. She is a Florida native, born and raised just outside of Tallahassee in Wakulla County. She loves to write and earned a Bachelors Degree in Business Management from Saint Leo University.

Rebecca Fischer (Bex) is the illustrator of the book and is a naturally talented artist who improved her love and skill through self-teaching, as she always wanted to be a cartoonist and work for Disney. Nassir’s White Coat is the first book she ever illustrated professionally. She lives in the Sierra Nevada foothills and has an Associate degree in English and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Creative Writing from Southern New Hampshire University.
